did i mention something about heat in my last post?  cuz i’m hear to tell you, the heat is LONG gone, and chilly temps have settled in. like, sweater weather and fleece socks temps.  and i don’t like it one bit.  too soon.  much too soon.  i will say this week looks promising as far as sunny skies and comfortable temps returning, but i think i’m going to miss the heat.

yes, i finished that little craft project i started.  it hardly took any time at all.  i’m not quite satisfied with its visual punch.  but at least it got my feet wet again with the crafting and creative side of my life.  DSCF0971

the idea i totally copied inspiration:DSCF0968

(from the crafts design book, beaudette smith)

obviously i was going for a much simpler version.  if you picture this hanging in a little white cottage, with white walls and white painted floors and all my fabulous vintage danish/swedish/norwegian finds, i think it’ll pass as high art.  in my little brain it does.DSCF0983_editedhere it sits nestled amongst one of several piles of art that i can’t hang on my walls due to landlord law.

oh, the house hunt drama.  alas, the cottage won’t be mine.  i got outbid.  and then those buyers backed out.  and so i re-bid.  but got outbid again.  what’s new?  but will the original dream house now become a contender once again?  it’s a serious game of cheap house ping-pong.  and i’m getting pinged and ponged all over the place.

(long distance bday wishes going out to midwest jen celebrating her birthday in bed with a good book and bad tv.  that’s just sad.  it’s a monday birthday and monday birthdays are the worst.)

snackin’ and craftin’

26 08 2009

i’ve pretty much taken up permanent residence on my porch in these waning days of summer doing the exact same thing every day.  snacking and crafting.  my apartment has become unbearably hot and it’s the only place i can find relief.  picked up a vintage craft book several weeks (months?) ago and it has re-ignited a fire in me that has been long been extinguished.  like, for 2 years.  and that’s kind of sad, really.  so i’m diving in again with felt and embroidery.DSCF0961

oh, it’s a good book (aside from the smell.  and even though it’s been outside on my porch for weeks, the smell hangs tough.)  anyway, it’s full of beautiful artwork with loads of inspiration.  and a slant toward scandinavian design, of which i’m a big fan.  i mean, take that cover.  i LOVE it.

i wish i was an artist.  like, a REAL artist.  one who thinks up stuff inside her head.  and then makes a plan.  and then executes it.  me?  i can only really copy stuff.  which i suppose is the case for a great majority of people.  and therefore i fall into the category of copy-crafter.  or fake artist.  fake crafter.  but i do enjoy the meditative quality of it.  and the messiness of it all.  and it gets MESSY.  there are random strands of embroidery floss and felt scraps ALL OVER the place.  and i love it.

DSCF0955how funny is this tray?  little retro number featuring the classic snack of bread and sliced green peppers and raw eggs.  yum.

DSCF0957this is more like it.  kettle chips, fruit/nut mix and a refreshing iced coffee with sweetener.  and by sweetener i mean, well, i think you all know what i mean.  one would think the coffee would make me all jittery and unable to be the expert crafting stitching queen i am, but not so.  DSCF0960alright, maybe the stiches are not exactly perfect, but from a distance….”masterpiece” comes to mind.

i’m hopeful posting this masterpiece preview will actually provoke me to finish it.  but don’t hold your breath.

in other nonrelated non-snacking and non-crafting news, yes, i continue to look for a house.  and no, it’s not looking good.  my dream house came and went AGAIN and i was fine with it.  i didn’t get all emotionally involved like i did the first time around.  and i tried for the back-up lovah, but as it stands now, that ain’t looking good either.

and so i craft.  to keep my mind occupied and away from the agony that is searching for a dream house on a broke-ass budget.

and the heat goes on

19 08 2009

day 5 of an august heat wave strikes me as an apropos time to post about fancy mugs from which to sip hot spiced wine or hot apple cider with tuaca.DSCF0929

recently thrifted and currently being stashed away in a trip trap tray.DSCF0930

sorry.  it’s all i’ve got.  iced coffee, maybe?  with tia maria?  maybe just iced coffee with ice and more ice.

i’m melting.

how how how how HOW do i go from a woman who has spent her entire adult life sleeping without a bed perched upon a bed frame – years and YEARS with no bed, just a mattress/boxspring on the floor (let’s not even talk about the entire year i spent sleeping on a chair/ottoman combination) – how do i go from owning zero beds to 2 beds in the blink of an eye?

my west elm bed i ordered in may was backordered.  and backordered some more.  woodbedfrme_white_F08_080828095203_ViewInColor_heroand then this past week, when it was due to be shipped on august 10th, i received another email stating the bed was backordered again ’til 9/28.  oh really?  so, friday i’m in goodwill and i had a discount card and i thought, “screw it.  i’ll just get this perfectly sized mid-century headboard and footboard that seem to have magically fallen into my lap out of the blue.  it’s a sign!!!”  i got it for $23, which might seem like a terrific bargain, but now i’ve got to actually buy bed rails and a support system and there probably goes my terrific bargain right out the window.  but whatever.  sometimes you just have to buy something when it’s there.

so i brought the headboard/footboard home and then had to mad dash to a friend’s house where we were preparing for a tag sale.  spent the night at her house, tag-saled all morning, left there to go to my real job, and in this sneaky window of time that i have not checked my inbox, west elm sends a shipping confirmation number email!  they’ve upped and shipped out the bed they told me wouldn’t be in for over a month’s time.  that’s right.  upped and shipped.  i didn’t have time to cancel the order.  0 to 2  in less than 24 hrs.

pretty sleek and snazzy.  agreed?  can it be compared to room and board’s grove bed in walnut?  oh, i think it can.  if you use your imagination.

i suppose i’ll keep ’em both in case i DO buy a house and end up having a guest bedroom (or a guest house.  think big.)  chances are good one of them will be in a tag sale years down the road.

first temps in the 90s since april 28th.”  104 days ago.  how many times did i hear THAT today from every channel, every weather-person, every news guy?  top story of the day.  first temps in the 90s all summer.

early morning moon

early morning moon

the early morning was just right.  just what you look for in a summer morning, the way summer mornings should be.  i opened my door at 6:30 AM to take out the trash and the air was thick and hazy.  i think you could say sultry.  and quiet.  and i had the ‘hood to myself.  no dogs barking.  no kids being yelled at by their moms.  no car alarms going off.  pure heaven.

of course, she warmed up aplenty once the sun came out and i beat the heat by escaping to an afternoon matinee of julie & julia.”  oh meryl, you are pure perfection.   i giggled every time she came on screen.  and this is EXACTLY what i look for in a summertime movie.  light and entertaining.  and i’ll be darned – those pwah-2 chairs (poitoux) i mentioned in my last post were in all the french cafes in the film.  and there were great lamps and great cookware.  DSCF0921_editedthis fry pan of mine weighs 50 – 60 lbs at least.  seems like something julia would’ve used.  me, i’ve never used it.  i’m faking it here.  but doesn’t it look like i love to cook?DSCF0920i wish.

playing tourist

8 08 2009

two locals playing tourists in a tourist town on a perfect summer evening after a perfect pad thai dinner with a perfect waiter (and ridiculously expensive red sparkling wine, oops.  *note to self – ALWAYS bring your reading glasses to dimly lit restaurants in order to see wine list prices – no WONDER it tasted so delicious.  i threw my highly developed palette for cheap booze a curve ball.)   THIS should be my life every night.  alas, it ain’t.  but i’ll take it when i can get it.  DSCF0913

and just to throw something designery into this post.  a stuffy, traditional downtown inn sporting some très très expensive poitoux french bistro chairs i just read about on apartment therapy.  (took this pic through glass so it kinda stinks.)                                                                                                                                                           DSCF0915_edited

900 bucks a pop.  i can’t even wrap my brain around spending that for one chair.  give me a 10 dollar thrift store find any day of the week.
