so much to discuss…

22 09 2009

…and yet so little of significance.

first, ricky gervais.  i cannot begin to tell you how much i love a funny man.  emmys 2009?  ya see him?  click here (bonus – jon stewart is also in the clip.)  ricky gervais has a new movie coming out – “the invention of lying” – i have a feeling i’ll be there opening day (october 2nd) for the first showing.

oprah.  monday’s show.  a 60s inspired retro show.  oprah looked fabulous.  especially her hair. the audience was all decked out in 60s garb as well.  the show itself was so-so, but the mad men segment was worth it.

letterman.  obama.   good stuff.  the heart shaped potato?  i was dyin’.

on a rice cracker.  somehow “rice crackers as utensils” just doesn’t have the same flow to it as “chips as utensils.”  and besides, it’s rice overload.  rice on rice.  that’s too much rice.       DSCF3041

and so i give you spanish rice on a chip:DSCF3042

and i continue to bring yet even more sexy in the brown fall boots.  another low-heeled version.  this time from privo.DSCF3052

and goodbye summer.  i can’t bear it.  hello fall.

and what better to go with that spanish rice than a margarita in a gold wheat glass on a vintage red leaf plastic coaster?  is the wheat glass fall-ish?  i say it’s harvesty.  and harvesty = fall.  fall harvest.  and that’s about all the enthusiasm i can muster to welcome launch the fall season.DSCF3056

cigs and summer

5 08 2009

i can safely say summer has arrived .  finally.  dare i say, today could even register as “oppressive.”  or maybe it’s only oppressive in my apartment – i gave up central air when i moved here to save money.  on these types of days i say, “why?  why?  for the love of gawd, WHY?”

yesterday was a spectacular specimen of a day and i visited old young and exceptionally attractive friends at their summer rental cottage.  DSCF0886

unfortunately, we didn’t have an umbrella as pictured numerous times here and for the first time in YEARS, despite my application of SPF 50 (several times i might add) i got some sunburned shoulders.  drat.  there goes my attempt at julianne moore/nicole kidman pearly white skin right out the window.

since i was in the prestigious shoreline area i popped into the prestigious thrift store.  got a 1964 mccall’s decorating book and some vintage beach-themed coasters.  honest to goodness, i own more coasters than i know what to do with.  if i used a different coaster with each cocktail i drink i think i’d have enough to last a lifetime.  i’ve got to throw some mean fêtes and use these babies up.DSCF0887

threw in a couple old glasses and another rosti utensil i found earlier in the week at a lesser prestigious thrift store.

since i’m pretty much a loner, my daily goal is tryin’ like heck to find a laugh out there somewhere, something that amuses me (other than laughing at myself.)  (i know, pathetic.  i used to laugh my brains out daily til i created this recluse life for myself, but i hate when people talk about how they “used to be.”  ex:  i was a 105 lb. bride, i used to be able to do 50 push-ups,  i used to have six-pack abs, i used to work out all the time, i used to have friends, i used to make a decent living.  ENOUGH with the “used-tos” already.)   but seriously, i used to laugh a lot.

this mccall’s decorating book has REALLY great info in it, but NOT really good decor pictures (for my taste.)  i didn’t quite realize how many vintage decorating books i’ve amassed over the years and they’ve literally become my go-to bibles.  but while flipping through this mccall’s i couldn’t help but notice how important cigarettes were in design.  and this, my friends, this is the stuff that cracks me up.  i realize it isn’t even funny, but  i do get a kick out of it.

and hello?  the “scatter wall.”  i love the name for it.  the grouping of several oil paintings in the lounge area which you see EVERYWHERE today.

and this isn’t even all of  ’em.  yah, the decor isn’t my fave, but i’m loving the ciggies.  and i don’t smoke.

but i do drink.  action shot of this week’s thrifted cocktail glass.  i know i know, a cosmo – so 5 years ago (or maybe even more) – but i thought it was a better match for spicy chips.  the sweet/spicy combo.  and i’m sick of the margs.  oh, bite my tongue.  did i SAY that?  i’m never sick of the margs.  just wanted something a little different.

man it’s hot.

i’ve been waiting A LONG TIME to say that.

hot summer afternoon

quick post in anticipation of mad men’s season 3 premiere coming soon.  fun, old  mad-men-esque glass (i’ve never seen this pattern before) holding a refreshing margarita and kitsch souvenir florida tray and coaster holding snacks.  perfect hot summer afternoon snack party tray to enjoy on the porch reading a book.  DSCF0875

yes, sometimes i even read books.

the fourth

can something be considered vintage if it’s only 12 years old?  probably not.  more like outdated.  out of style.  i don’t care.  i love ’em and i can’t part with ’em and i break ’em out once or twice a year.  the “vintage” dr. scholl flag shoes:

nothing quite trumps those shoes, though.

dinner and drinks at a friend’s house last evening – drinks were supposed to be on the deck, but alas, you guessed it – rain.  rain rain rain.  it cleared up for a minute and i got this shot:DSCF0767

i didn’t get a picture of the celebratory cocktail, but i highly recommend –  the strawberry muddle.  easy and refreshing.  because you need refreshing in these rainy, chilly temps.

happy 4th of july!  i’m one of the lucky ones who gets to work this holiday.  and yes, the sun is SHINING.  think of me fondly while you’re picnicking and potato salading and lobstering and i’m locked in a dark room with no windows massaging my brains out.

80 degrees and SUNNY

30 06 2009

it’s a miracle.  it’s my day off and the weather has cooperated.  i will say yesterday (also my day off) ended up being a beautiful day after a slow start.  overcast for most of the day and then *poof* –  like magic  –  we had sun and warmth.  and i had peeked at the 10 day weather forecast and it hadn’t looked promising.  those clouds with rain showers icons on EVERY day.   my point is, it’s the first time i’ve opened my windows for any length of time and let some fresh air in.  in ALL the rooms.  and oh, say, in 15 minutes, this was the result of an open window:DSCF0743a wind gust blew my plant right off the ledge and busted in a million pieces.  this is how my life works.  i have to PAY THE PRICE for nice weather.  it’s never easy, i tell ya.

began the stripping process of my ugly decoupaged table.

and i scraped some more:DSCF0744

and that’s as far as i got today.  but there IS a nice little pattern on the top of the table and i think, if i can figure out what i’m doing, i think i’m going to have a fine piece of danish woodwork.DSCF0745

can you see what i’m talking about?                                                                                        DSCF0746i can’t get over how excited i get over a little side table.  but this is my life now.  this is what gets my blood flowing.

prior to seeing kathy griffin the other night, we stopped at a little wine bar and i opted for a flight of pink sparkling wines with our tapas selections.  oh, everything was so TASTY and i’ve had pink sparkling wine on the brain since then.  picked up a bottle of  pink prosecco raboso tonight and it just hits the spot.  DSCF0747oh i love summer.  i love summer weather.  i love summer weather on my days off.  i love my days off.  i was meant to be rich.

yup, a rich chick who drinks cheap booze “a delicious light pink colored sparkler that displays fine bubbles loaded with aromas and flavors of sweet cherries and fresh pink strawberries.  it is light to medium bodied, lively, fresh and explosively fruity.”

and who shops goodwill.  oh, it’s my dream.

another day…

9 06 2009

another police incident in my ‘hood.

DSCF0658

get me out of here.

in the middle of a long day of drudgery yesterday (moving stuff into storage,) i popped into the local thrift store for some mental relief.  again – found more house related items:

c’mon.  it’s GOT to be some sort of omen, right?  maybe i’m supposed to move to sweden and live in a cottage on the water and do swedish massage.  lord knows i love the design there.  there would be that little problem of not knowing the language, though.

strawberry mojito in a wicked vintage glass

strawberry mojito in a wicked vintage glass

capped my evening off with one of these.  a strawberry mojito.  had my first one ever the other night after meeting a friend for a bite to eat and a refreshing summer beverage at olio.  i’d never even heard of a strawberry mojito before , but i was feeling adventurous.  i always have fun there, but indulge me for a moment…what is it with me and PEOPLE?  i will never understand people.  not much of a crowd at the bar when we met there (it was past the dinner hour.)  we chose to sit at the far corner.

small u-shaped bar at olio

small u-shaped bar at olio

the one girl left, the couple moved to a table to eat dinner, and once again, lori and i cleared out a bar like nobody’s bidness.  the bar is completely empty now when in walks a couple.  and where do they choose to sit in completely empty bar with, oh, i dunno, a dozen seats from which to choose?DSCF0653

DSCF0654honest to goodness, it’s unnerving and uncomfortable.  no buffer zone.  this is the sort of thing that usually happens to me at the movie theater (see here and here.)

whatever.  i managed to make a “boundary” of sorts using my eyeglasses case and bulky set of keys in between me and the girl.   apparently my laws-of-attraction quality was in overdrive yet again.  of course it’s always in stall mode when a single, good-looking man with a personality comes around.  wait….does that EVER happen?  is there even such a thing?  at this point i don’t even CARE about the good-looking.  give me single with a personality.  i say, “no such thing.”
