palm springs.

i’ll see ya soon.

well, not soon soon.  but soon enough.

one, two, three, four, five bucks.

will it fit in the carry-on?  i think it has to.

bad gift shops

25 09 2009

sometimes when you are inundated with amazing images of scandinavian apartments and houses, and you live in the united states where there are ticky tacky gift shops peppered throughout all the towns across the country, you forget maybe there are similar tacky gift stores say, in denmark.  because we don’t have that image of denmark here.  everything seems perfect and oh-so-stylish and comfortable and cozy and bright and cool.

again – i have more danish candle holders than i know what to do with, but i’ll buy ’em when i see ’em.  and i got a little excited when i saw these miniature 7″ white candle holders.  sure, they’re a little scuffed, but no big deal.

and then they rolled in the box.

mmm.  hand painted roses on danish candle holders.

aw heck.  bought ’em anyway.

cuz that’s how i roll.

ugly stepsister

23 09 2009

back in february i picked up a little white arabia finel measuring cup/saucepan thingie while out thrifting.  in pretty darn pristine condition.  i would venture to guess never been used.DSCF3065

the other day i felt obligated to pick up its ugly stepsister, found at the bottom of a utensil bin at goodwill.  looks like she’s been rode hard and put away wet.  used and abused and left on the side of the road.  abandoned.  but she hung in there.   and now she’s in a loving home where someone appreciates her character.

gawd, this is the stupidest post ever.

i’d post a couple arabia plates i’ve found but one of  them is packed up in storage.  here’s a tiny decorative wall plate:DSCF3059

i still have visions of owning a home someday and having a plate wall similar to this

and since today’s post is about arabia, i suppose i can show a photo of the ubiquitous mushroom bowl from arabia finel. DSCF0650_edited

does fall make you boring?  cuz i feel like i’ve suddenly become boring.

some of you are probably thinking, “suddenly?”

11 09 2009

won 12 bucks in lotto.

i feel it.  i’m on a winning streak.

don’t all desperate people say this?

learned to drive on a volkswagen bug bought here back in the early 70s.  the place no longer exists – torn down and replaced by a 99 restaurant (tragic.)  so a fine nostalgic collector’s item for me at 59¢.

i feel like the girl who cried wolf.  hired a contractor to check out a house for me and draw up an estimate for needed repairs.  and now i’m gonna try and buy a house (again.)  i’ve heard this story before.

and again i craft.DSCF3024

nine nine nine

9 09 2009

it being 09-09-09 i better play lotto.   i’m sure no-one else has thought of this.

new tabletop cloth/tapestry/not sure what it is picked up at goodwill.  despite the roosters, i don’t think this screams country.  there was something about it that appealed to me (the price? – $1.)  is that the rooster’s comb or are they wearing berets?DSCF3010

i say beret.  a jaunty-capped rooster.  who can resist?

floor lamp

6 09 2009

sometimes i think i’ve got so much visual inspiration clogging up my brain from absorbing so many decor magazines and so many vintage decorating books and so many design blogs, i buy things because i think i should or i’ll regret it.  now if i owned a store it would be one thing.  or if i had a garage to store this stuff, it’d be another.  but i’ve got neither.  i think this vintage gooseneck floor lamp has the potential to be pretty darn awesome with a little cleanup and some spray paint.  maybe a bright pink or bright yellow, but probably just white.  but ya never know…

anyway, it was 4 bucks and it works and i was forced into buying it.DSCF3005_editedDSCF3007

where have i seen this?  i can’t figure it out to save my life.

*UPDATE* – oh, i figured out where i’d seen this lamp.  mystery solved – the ol’ vintage decorating books.  not sure if it’s a good or bad thing.  you decide.DSCF3014

from “the apartment book,” 1979 – in yellow, the wall lamp version.  not bad.  not bad at all.

from the same book, a red version.  ok ok, still not so bad.

mmmm.  and then the white version:DSCF3016

but the full room:DSCF3015

oh dear.  that ain’t good.  just focus focus focus on the lamp.  the lamp looks good, right?

and from a 1981 “better homes and gardens new decorating book,” 80s at its best:DSCF3019

again, focus on the lamps.  the lamps are the best thing in this room.DSCF3020

yup, that’s a cat in that photo.  the cats are haunting me.

4 09 2009

i’m no cat fan.

in fact, i just can’t stand them.  i know i know.  this immediately takes me out of the majority percentile of the female population.  like, i can’t even fake it.  and i’m a LEO.  the biggest cat of ’em all.  but i do like a lion.

bennington lion plate

bennington lion plate

picked up this mod cat at goodwill today.  i love it.  it’s got a little crazing at its midsection, but i think crazing = character.

and then.

then i bought something i would never ever ever buy in a million trillion years.  i bought a cat.  a ceramic cat.  and i only bought it cuz i thought it might be worth some money.  it might be worth more than the $7 (GASP) i paid for it.  $7 for what i think is one ugly cat.  i still can’t believe i bought it.  but i did.

bitossi cat

bitossi cat

apparently this is some aldo londi for raymor bitossi blu rimini cat.  (blu – not misspelled.)  again – i don’t know much about them.   i’ve seen other cats in this same style and they were way cooler than what i’ve got.  beggars can’t be choosers.  in goodwill, you take what you get.  but this is troublesome for me.  i usually only buy what i truly like.  today i bought something because i thought it might be worth something.  and i hate it.  but heck, i’m only out  7 bucks.

a couple cats

a couple cats

this could be my sign to set up an ebay account.

doesn’t he look like he’s saying, “please love me.”

maybe he’s so bad he’s good?
